Parent Council

Information

By law schools have a duty to promote parents’ involvement in children’s and young people’s education. At Stranraer Academy we are really keen to extend an invitation to all parents/carers to participate and contribute to the life of the school, to make the School as good as it can be. The work of the Parent Council is crucial in maintaining and improving the learning environment for our children. The objectives of the Stranraer Parent Council are;

  • To work in partnership with the school and community, to create a welcoming school which is inclusive for all parents/carers
  • To promote partnership between the school, its pupils and all its parents/carers
  • To develop and engage in activities which support the education and welfare of the pupils
  • To identify and represent the views of parents/carers on the education provided by the school and other matters affecting the education and welfare of the pupils.

The Parent Council meets approximately every 4 weeks, on the second Tuesday of the month at 6.30 pm in the Conference Room, so please join us for tea/coffee.

The Parent Council helps to create an environment where all parents know that their views matter, and where they feel confident and comfortable putting them forward. They work on behalf of all parents to discuss educational matters that are of importance to all. They do not get involved in individual matters relating to children or staff in the school.

Further information about the role of the Parent Council can be found in Section 2 of the Parent Council resource below.

Pupil Council

What is a pupil council?

A pupil council is a formal group of pupils within a school who are elected by their peers to represent them and their views.

Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) says that children and young people should have a say in decisions that affect their lives.  A school council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them.

The Pupil Council currently consists of over 60 representatives across S2-S6, with the number set to increase in August with the inclusion of the new S1 cohort. The reintroduction of the Pupil Council is integral to the emphasis being placed on Pupil Voice and will present pupils with the opportunity to have their say on the big issues impacting upon them on a day-to-day basis within the school.

Meetings will be held monthly and representatives from all year groups will also be invited to meet with Mr Farquhar to discuss the key issues from these meetings.

Parent Council Social Media

The Parent Council are always incredibly active across its social media and continuously adds new posts about events, news, and opportunities, as well as supporting and building capacity amongst Scotland’s parents to capitalise on children’s learning experiences.

Research evidence shows that when parents, carers and other family members are effectively involved in their children’s education, the outcome for their children is better and our parent council continue to contribute to the school and greater community.
