Information & Advice

The National Parent Forum of Scotland (NPFS) works in partnership with parents, carers, and educators to help every child in Scotland reach their full potential. The NPFS provides information, resources, and a national voice for parents on education issues, supporting positive home–school partnerships and meaningful parental involvement in learning.

CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command) helps keep children and young people safe online. If something has made you feel worried, unsafe, or uncomfortable while using the internet, you can report it directly to CEOP. Their team of specialists work with police and child protection partners to investigate concerns and provide support to those in need.

Parentzone Scotland offers information and guidance to help parents and carers support their child’s learning and development. From understanding the curriculum to finding learning resources and advice on wellbeing, Parentzone Scotland provides valuable insights into how children learn and how families can play an active role in their education.

Enquire is Scotland’s national advice service for additional support for learning. It provides clear, reliable information and guidance to help parents, carers, professionals, and young people understand children’s rights to extra support in school. Enquire offers advice through its website, helpline, and resources to ensure every child gets the help they need to learn and thrive.

The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA) promotes, supports, and defends independent advocacy across Scotland. Independent advocacy helps people have their voices heard, especially when they are facing difficult decisions or situations. SIAA works to ensure everyone has access to high-quality advocacy that protects their rights, promotes inclusion, and empowers individuals to express their views freely.

The Scottish Child Law Centre (SCLC) provides free, confidential legal advice to children, young people, parents, and carers on all aspects of Scots law that affect children and young people. The centre works to promote children’s rights and ensure that those who need help understand their legal options and are supported to make informed decisions.

Child Protection

All children have the right to be protected from harm, abuse and neglect. Every adult in Scotland has a role in ensuring all our children and young people live safely and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The vision for all children and young people in Dumfries and Galloway is that they should be: safe, nurtured, healthy, achieving, active, respected and responsible and included. Schools and front-line education and child care services will play an important role in ensuring all children and young people are safe and well. Further information can be found at

Support-for-children-and-families

Parents, carers and pupils have a key role in keeping the school community safe. We would therefore urge parents to share any information which would keep everyone safe, and to support and encourage their child(ren) to do the same.

There is an expectation that drugs, substances and weapons will not be brought into the school environment ‘In responding to drug/substance or weapons-related incidents, schools will follow education authority guidelines. In all such circumstances, parents/carers will be contacted, and their cooperation expected. The police will be involved if drug use is suspected or discovered or there are concerns regarding the possession, threat or use of weapons.

All schools in Dumfries and Galloway are expected to record any unusual incidents or concerns they may have about a child. Usually, this information will be shared with parents/carers when issues of concern arise. The wellbeing of children and young people is a priority for all schools. As a result, all schools have child protection coordinators who will work with children, families and supporting partners in matters relating to Safeguarding and Child Protection.
