School Meals Information

Dumfries and Galloway Council took action in response to the Scottish Government school meal legislation that was implemented on the 8th of April 2021. The changes involve modifications to the food groups served throughout the school day. The purpose of these adjustments is to offer a nutritious and balanced meal plan, prioritising healthy options for all students. Before implementing the updated guidelines, the council dedicated significant efforts to develop the Globetrotter Menu, ensuring compliance with the new standards while providing a diverse and appealing array of dishes. This menu considers the needs of students and schools and incorporates broader environmental and societal benefits associated with sustainable food practices. The council remains committed to ensuring that all students have access to high-quality, healthy meals, recognising the importance of promoting their overall well-being and educational success.

Café dg is the name of the school meal service provided by Dumfries and Galloway’s Commercial Group. Stranraer Academy Canteen provides a very high standard of accommodation.

It offers a range of nutritious full meals as well as sandwiches, baguettes and other snack items. The menus have a strong emphasis on healthy eating.

A two-course meal and drink can cost as little as £2.00. The Canteen is supervised by teaching staff. Pupils are not allowed to take food out of the Canteen.

The Canteen is also available before the start of the school day and during the morning interval. There is a selection of food available for the morning break. Food can be pre-ordered up to 11 am for both morning break and lunch.

The Young Scot Card in conjunction with the Fushion App can be used in the Canteen.

Free Meals are supplied to pupils whose parents/carers have made the necessary arrangements by application to Education Support Services, Children, Young People & Lifelong Learning, St Teresa’s Education Centre, Lochside, Dumfries, DG2 0DY ( 01387 260493) or to Stranraer Academy.

Free school meals are provided for all pupils in Primary 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well as those families on qualifying benefits.

Free School Meals can lead to a large saving each year, parents of primary school children can potentially save £361 and parents of secondary pupils can potentially save £370.

You will also be helping your child’s school if you qualify for Free School Meals. Some Scottish Government funding provided directly to schools is linked to the numbers of pupils who are registered as entitled to free school meals.

Canteen Menu

Dumfries and Galloway Council has made changes in accordance with the new Scottish Government legislation in relation to school meals. These changes took place on 8 April 2021 that saw variations to several food groups throughout the school day. In preparation for the legislative changes to school food, Dumfries and Galloway Council has developed its Globetrotter Menu.

School Menu

Secondary school meals are priced at £2.00. Payment can be made in cash or through Young Scot cards, obtainable from schools for cashless transactions. There are two methods to reload the cards:
  1. Online top-up
  2. Cash or cheque top-up at the school.

Natasha's Law

In October 2021, the UK Food Information Amendment, also known as Natasha’s Law, will come into effect and will require food businesses to provide full ingredient lists and allergen labelling on foods pre-packaged for direct sale on the premises.

Background

This new legislation has come into effect following the death of 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse in 2016, who had an allergic reaction to a baguette containing sesame that did not require allergen labelling.

What will change?

The legislation will require businesses to clearly label products for direct sale with the product name, a full ingredients list and all allergen information. Information provided on each product will include the 14 allergens listed in food information law as well as other ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.

Foods that the legislation will apply to include items packed at on the same premises that they are offered to consumers such as sandwiches, wrapped deli counter goods and boxed salads. It can also apply to food products that customers choose themselves, as well as pre-wrapped products behind a servery counter, mobile or temporary outlet.

Any food not in packaging when it is ordered is not required to be labelled.

Special Dietary Requirements

We try to provide meals to meet any special dietary requirements.

If your child has a food allergy or intolerance; a medically prescribed diet; or a diet for religious or cultural reasons, contact the school office in the first instance so that any necessary arrangements can be put in place.

You will need to provide a letter from your dietician or doctor if your child has special dietary requirement for medical reasons.

Free School Meals Information

Research in 2009 showed that a healthy school lunch improved educational outcomes, particularly in English and Science, it also showed a 15% reduction in absence due to sickness. (Healthy School Meals and Educational Outcomes: Institute for Social and Economic Research: January 2009)

As well as a hot meal in the canteen, young people can also pre-order their (cold) lunch at the interval and simply collect it to allow them to attend clubs or sports with their friends at lunch.

The uptake of Free School meals also helps your school: the more pupils who have Free School Meals the greater our funding becomes and it also increases our staffing. It’s a win-win situation for us all.

Stranraer Academy operates a cashless catering system where students can add money to their Young Scot cards and use these in the canteen. This means that any free school meal allowance is added to the card meaning the young people do not feel self-conscious about their entitlement.

Many eligible people are missing out on free school meals.

If you receive any of the following, you may be eligible for free school meals:

· Income Support
· Jobseeker’s Allowance (Income based)
· Employment and Support Allowance (Income based)
· Child Tax Credit on its own, with an annual taxable income of less than £16,105 (subject to change)
· Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit with an annual taxable income of less than £6,420 (subject to change)
· Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
· Universal Credit

If you would prefer to talk to someone in person please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Pupil Support Teacher.
