The Scottish Baccalaureate

The Scottish Baccalaureate in Science offers an enriching and demanding opportunity for students in the fifth and sixth years of secondary school. It incorporates a well-structured selection of subjects at Higher and Advanced Higher levels, complemented by the Interdisciplinary Project. This project enhances the program by providing a wider scope of knowledge and skills, fostering the development of generic skills, attitudes, and confidence essential for a successful transition into higher education and/or the workforce.

The Scottish Baccalaureate in Science consists of the following mandatory components:

Subjects at Higher and Advanced Higher Levels: Candidates are required to study a coherent group of subjects at Higher and Advanced Higher levels. These subjects provide a comprehensive understanding of scientific concepts, theories, and practical skills.

Interdisciplinary Project: The Interdisciplinary Project is a crucial element of the Scottish Baccalaureate in Science. It involves undertaking an independent research project that bridges different scientific disciplines. This project encourages students to explore connections between various fields of science and develop a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary approaches.

Generic Skills Development: The Baccalaureate aims to equip candidates with generic skills that are essential for higher education and employment. These skills include critical thinking, problem-solving, research, communication, teamwork, and independent learning. Students are expected to apply these skills throughout their study and project work.

Personal Research Project: As part of the Baccalaureate, candidates are required to undertake a personal research project. This project allows students to explore an area of interest within their chosen scientific field, conduct independent research, and present their findings in a written report.

These mandatory components work together to provide a comprehensive and challenging educational experience, preparing students for further studies in science or entry into the workforce.
