Photographer of the Week
A weekly competition celebrating great photography from across the school — open to everyone, S1 to S6. The strongest entries each week are shown here, with a public vote to pick your favourite. The top entries go through to the final, competing for Photographer of the Year just before the Christmas holidays.
Right, settle down, settle down.
It's me again, your one and only Photographer of the Week correspondent, broadcasting live from a window that still doesn't shut properly. Two weeks running now, and I am genuinely bursting with pride.
Before we get to this week's entries, we've got some unfinished business — last week's podium. Let's hear it one more time for our champions:
In bronze — arriving like a squadron of absolute units — it's Matthew Knowles and “Red Arrows Starburst.” Matthew, nine jets, one perfectly-timed shutter finger, and not a single blurry wing. Pure precision. The RAF should be sending YOU a Christmas card.
Silver medal, and still holding the laundry room hostage — Madison More and “Storm in Her Glory.” Storm the dog, looking up at that camera like he's just been told the vet's on the phone. Magnificent. An instant classic of the genre “dog looking offended.”
And your WINNER, the wasp that stung the hearts of the entire judging panel — Taylor Smith, “Wood Wasp Warrior.” Taylor, that photo is so sharp I nearly needed a plaster. Thoroughly deserved.
Right. Now, this week. Hold onto your blazers, because we've had an absolute cracker of a week for submissions.
We've got Sophia Chung down among the fungi, looking like she's discovered Narnia through a tree stump. Dillon Boyd found his own kingdom of mushrooms too — must be something in the water this fortnight. We've got Hunter Turner's dog mid-investigation in the undergrowth, nose to the wind like he's hunting for a lost sausage roll. Ben Buchanan's gone and got us Stair Park looking like it's been dipped in gold. Cameron McClymont caught a tractor at the exact right second, last load of the day, sky absolutely roaring. And Matthew Knowles is back — clearly not sleeping, with two cracking entries: a bike at sunset, and Lochinch so still you could stand a spoon up in it.
Then there's Mason Taylor's ocean sunset — technically filed under “Creative,” but Mason, that's a Photographer of the Week photo in disguise, we see right through it. Amber-Louise Mather sent us not one but TWO stormy skies, and Miller Hyslop sent us two more — rooftops ablaze and a glen gone purple. Are you two having a little competition of your own? Because it's working.
And from the Higher Photography crew — we've got a great show there too. Alex Harrop's butterfly among the blossom, Luke Bradbury out in the pitch dark hunting moths with a flash gun, Taylor Smith's spider — Taylor, between the wasp last week and this spider, I'm starting to think you have a personal vendetta against anything with too many legs. Kayla Lochhead's hazy glen, Madison More's bunny looking deeply suspicious through a tent flap, and Sophie Rennie's deer absolutely sprinting across a field like it's late for registration.
Now — here's the bit I love. It's not just the top three going through to the final this time. No, no. We've got wild cards, plenty of them. So every single photo you've just heard about is still in the running. Nobody's out. So get down to that voting form and give your favourite a tap, because this week, anybody could go all the way.
Right, that's me. Get voting, get snapping, and I'll see you — same time, same window — next week.
