Photographers of the Week – Halloween Special – 03/11/23

Welcome to a special Halloween edition of our “Photographer of the Week.” I understand it’s a couple of days late, but our Higher Photography class has put in significant effort to present you with some truly spine-chilling images. I hope you’ll relish the eerie creativity, digital enhancements, and the captivating atmosphere as our Higher Photography students begin to showcase their mastery of camera control.

First in our showcase is “Tree of Lost Souls” by Jake McKinstry. The twisted tree serves as the perfect subject for this image, and the addition of skulls and fog enhances the overall appeal. The mid f-number ensures a sharp focus on the foreground elements.

Damien Marsters presents “Undead Scholar in the Abandoned Halls,” an outstanding example of shallow lighting, adherence to the rule of thirds, beautiful contrast, and skillful digital manipulation. This image vividly narrates the tale of an undead schoolboy with a lot of dramatic flair.

“Twisted Secrets of the Silent Forest” by Jack Barrett offers a captivating symmetrical composition. The twisted tree adds a touch of drama as it emerges from the light. The silhouetted tree patterns maintain the viewer’s interest throughout the image.

Archie McCubbin’s “The Gaze from Beyond” uses a zooming effect and a longer exposure, creating a blurred environment as Archie zeroes in. The glowing eyes of the subject make for an engaging focal point, truly capturing the viewer’s attention.

New photography student Korbyn McCredie’s “Gazing into the Blair Witch Canopy” is exceptional, boasting a minimalist approach that generates stark patterns and sharp contrast, all while maintaining strong symmetry throughout.

Lucas Arnott’s “Specter of the Solitary Woods” achieves a perfect balance with its engaging symmetry. The image’s multi-layered elements, soft transparency, and added fog masterfully convey the atmosphere.

Finally, Damien Marsters returns with “Lurking in the Shadows.” This image adeptly employs the rule of thirds, ensuring that the viewer is transfixed on the werewolf’s eyes as it emerges from the subtle yet utterly terrifying fog.
