Photographers of the Year 2024

After a term filled with exceptional submissions, the judges were faced with an extraordinary challenge in selecting the winner for this year’s “Photographer of the Week” competition. In the end, they were unable to choose between two breathtaking entries, crowning both Misty Mountains by Ellie May Watson and Enchanted Red Wilderness by Amie Johnston as joint winners. Here, we delve into the photographic artistry behind these stunning images.

Misty Mountains by Ellie May Watson

Ellie May Watson’s Misty Mountains captures a hauntingly beautiful scene, evoking a sense of mystery and grandeur. The photograph is masterfully composed, with the jagged peaks of the mountains emerging dramatically from a thick shroud of mist. The low-hanging clouds not only add texture and depth but also enhance the ethereal mood of the piece. From a technical perspective, the image demonstrates excellent control of exposure. The balance between the dark foreground and the softly lit peaks ensures that no detail is lost in the shadows, while the subdued colour palette of greys and blues creates a serene yet moody atmosphere. The use of leading lines—formed by the natural contours of the mountains—guides the viewer’s eye deeper into the frame, making it a truly immersive experience.

Enchanted Red Wilderness by Amie Johnston

In contrast, Amie Johnston’s Enchanted Red Wilderness offers a vivid and dynamic portrayal of nature. The focal point of the image, a majestic stag crossing a misty road, is perfectly timed and framed, capturing a fleeting moment of wildlife in motion. The warm, earthy tones of the stag’s coat and the muted red hues of the surrounding landscape create a striking colour harmony. Johnston’s composition demonstrates a keen eye for balance and storytelling. The diagonal placement of the road adds a sense of movement and direction, while the blurred background effectively isolates the subject, drawing attention to the stag’s graceful stride. The soft lighting, likely taken during the golden hour, adds a dreamlike quality to the scene, reinforcing its enchanting allure.

Second Place: The Hunt by Megan Pirrie

In second place was Megan Pirrie with her exceptional image The Hunt. This sharp and stunning photograph captures a cat stalking its prey, perfectly framed by the blades of grass that add layers of depth and intrigue. The piercing feline eyes, brimming with intensity, immediately draw the viewer in. The judges admired the impeccable composition, where every element—from the poised predator to the subtle textures of the grass—contributes to the narrative tension and visual impact of the image. Pirrie’s ability to capture such a precise moment with clarity and intent highlights her technical expertise and creative vision. The play of light and shadow further enhances the drama, making The Hunt a standout entry.

Third Place: Liquid Elegance by Beth Blythe

In third place was Beth Blythe with Liquid Elegance. This photograph is a testament to timing and precision, as it uses a fast shutter speed to freeze a dynamic moment in exquisite detail. The water, captured in stunning stillness, creates dramatic patterns and textures that seem almost sculptural in form. Blythe’s mastery of light and composition is evident in the way she isolates the movement, turning the natural flow of water into a piece of art. The interplay of reflections and shadows adds further depth, making Liquid Elegance a celebration of form, pattern, and texture. Well done, Beth, on this remarkable achievement.
