Photographers of the Week – 26/09/25

0:00 / 0:00

This week’s entries are a treat for the eyes — and a reminder that some people were clearly born knowing how to press a shutter button.

Big congratulations to last week’s winners: Keara Bark, Alistair Swan, and Lola McCaig — who now stride boldly into December’s final. And of course, a tip of the hat to a few wildcards — sometimes the surprises steal the show!

Back in the days of film cameras, I once tried to take a “perfect” photo of the school playground. I aimed carefully, pressed the shutter… and weeks later, when the film came back, I discovered I’d taken an extreme close-up of a mud puddle. A mud puddle! I tried to explain it was an “abstract reflection of school life,” but my teacher just stared and said, “Very… muddy interpretation.” That day I learned three things: patience is everything, always check your framing, and if anyone asks, just say you’re “developing your style.” Honestly, it was a classic case of a camera not fulfilling its dream of being a racecar driver — it couldn’t remain focused.

Now, onto this week’s entries! Daniel Moradillo’s Heights of Beauty gives the mountains such grandeur I was half tempted to pack hiking boots. Zara Hamilton’s Sky Trails floats across the page like clouds on a sugar rush — dreamy, whimsical, and impossible to ignore. Hunter Turner’s Wild Grace shows a deer so majestic it could demand its own royalty cheque. Rylee McClurg’s The Perfect Catch has me lakeside, rod in hand, imagining the one that didn’t get away… and maybe plotting revenge.

From triumphant sports to jaw-dropping landscapes, ethereal skies, majestic wildlife, and quiet moments of reflection, this week’s entries are a brilliant mix of skill, creativity, and just the right amount of mischief. Honestly, I’m not sure who’s having more fun — the photographers, the subjects, or me gawking at their work. And don’t worry — no mud puddles were harmed in the making of these photographs, though a couple of blue tits may now be demanding royalties.

Don’t forget to cast your vote for this week’s winner!

Photographer of the Week is open to all students, so please send your images to Ross James at gw19jamesross@glow.sch.uk. Alternatively, visit our wider achievement page to upload your successes. If you have a photograph you’re proud of, we want to see it!

This Weeks Entries

Vessels at Rest by Alex Brown

“Vessels at Rest” is basically boat therapy. The calm harbour scene feels like the boats are on a group spa day—floating, chilling, and reflecting (literally). The reflections in the water give the whole piece a neat symmetry, like nature’s Photoshop. Soft skies and muted clouds balance out the colourful boats, keeping the vibe peaceful rather than postcard-cheesy. With the hills quietly photobombing in the back, the whole image feels grounded yet dreamy—a snapshot of stillness that makes you want to breathe slower.

The Blue Tit Delight by Keara Bark

“The Blue Tit Delight” is basically a birdy dinner party caught on camera. The two blue tits show off their flashy blue-and-yellow outfits against a soft, blurry background that makes them pop even more. The round food source acts like nature’s dinner table, pulling our eyes right into the action. Gentle lighting adds a cosy glow, making the feathers and textures feel extra detailed. Overall, it’s a joyful snapshot of wildlife—tiny birds, big personality, and a reminder that even snack time can look magical.

The Perfect Catch by Rylee McClurg

"The Perfect Catch” is fishing without the soggy socks. The close-up of the hand on the rod pulls us straight into the action, guiding our eyes down the line to the glittering water—still clinging to those dramatic post-cast droplets. The golden sunset light bathes the whole scene in calm, warm tones, like nature just hit the “relax” filter. With rolling hills and an open sky in the distance, the photo feels big yet intimate, capturing the patience, calm, and quiet joy of just being outdoors—whether you reel in a fish or just a good story.

Thrill Seeker by Harry Mcintyre

“Thrill Seeker” is pure adrenaline on two wheels. The rider mid-wheelie screams confidence—basically shouting, “Look, Mum, no hands!” (well, almost). The bright gear pops against the muted background, making sure we don’t miss the stunt. Grass flying, spectators in the distance, and that tilted angle all crank up the action, so you can practically feel the rush. It’s not just a photo—it’s a snapshot of speed, skill, and the joy of living life in the fast lane (literally).

The Blush Rose by Katie Kyle

“The Blush Rose” is nature showing off its soft side. The delicate pink petals layer up like nature’s own origami, giving depth and a dreamy, romantic feel. Gentle lighting makes the colours glow and the textures pop, while the dark, blurry background keeps the rose centre stage—like a spotlight moment on the garden catwalk. Simple, elegant, and quietly dramatic, it captures the rose’s timeless charm and that bittersweet reminder: beauty doesn’t last forever, so stop and smell it while you can.

Transport Titan by Ryan Nicholson

"Transport Titan” is a truck portrait with attitude. The head-on view makes it look less like a vehicle and more like it’s about to audition for Transformers. Chrome details gleam, headlights glare with purpose, and that deep black paint job pops hard against the soft background. Even the logo and plate add character—because trucks deserve personality too. It’s a bold nod to power, craft, and the unsung heroes that keep everything moving (literally).

A Musical Connection by Iris Walker

This shot nails that mix of nostalgia and drama. The figure striking a pose in front of the old-school phone booth feels like they’re about to call the past and ask for their mixtape back. The cool blues and dreamy lighting give the whole scene a floaty, “lost in thought” vibe, while the smoky background adds extra mystery—like someone set the fog machine to emotional. The play of light and shadow keeps the focus on the performer, hinting at a story of connection, memory, and maybe a tune or two that time can’t quite hang up on.

Tiny Triumph by Alistair Swan

This little trophy packs a big personality. Its bold yellow shine makes it pop like the life of the party, while the blurred backdrop keeps all eyes on its playful victory pose. Smooth, glossy surfaces catch the light, giving it extra sparkle, and those classic handles scream “winner!” (even if it’s just for being best at Mario Kart). Simple, cheerful, and proudly pint-sized, it celebrates the fun side of competition—because sometimes the smallest prizes bring the biggest smiles.

Quiet Moments by Georgia Sutherland

"Quiet Moments” is autumn at its most thoughtful. A winding path pulls us along with the lone figure strolling through warm-toned trees—basically nature saying, “take a breather.” The soft, muted light keeps things calm and contemplative, while the empty bench in the background almost whispers, “come sit, think, and maybe eat a sandwich.” It’s a cosy, reflective scene that celebrates slowing down and soaking up the peace of the season.

Pastoral Peace by Archie Ashton

"Pastoral Peace” is countryside calm served fresh. A lone cow grazes like it’s auditioning for Most Relaxed Mammal, perfectly at home in the lush green field. Muted tones and earthy colours keep things soothing, while the autumnal tree in the background adds depth—and a subtle “time is passing, don’t rush” vibe. It’s a gentle snapshot of rural life, where peace, nature, and a cow’s slow chew reign supreme.

Heights of Beauty by Daniel Moradillo

"Heights of Beauty” is basically nature showing off. Snow-capped peaks rise like they own the place, while the calm lake below reflects them like a very obedient mirror. Lush valleys and tiny villages add pops of life, making the scene feel big, vibrant, and somehow cosy all at once. Light and shadow dance across the mountains, highlighting every crag and crevice—basically saying, “look at me, I’m majestic!” It’s a view that inspires awe… and maybe a mild urge to hike.

Sky Trails by Zara Hamilton

"Sky Trails” is clouds doing a graceful dance. Wispy streaks twist across a vibrant blue sky, with light and shadow adding depth like nature’s own special effects. Tiny glistening droplets make it feel alive, while the soft focus invites you to daydream along. It’s a whimsical snapshot of the sky, celebrating its fleeting, ever-changing beauty—and maybe making you wish you could float along for a bit.

Wild Grace by Hunter Turner

"Wild Grace” is deer elegance, front and centre. Those branching antlers scream “look at me,” while the calm expression and soft fur keep things serene. Grasses and foliage frame the scene like nature’s own photo studio, and the gentle lighting highlights every detail of coat and landscape. It’s a snapshot of wildlife at its finest—majestic, peaceful, and just a little show-offy.

Passion and Play by Dylan Heron

“Passion and Play” is football energy on full display. James Dolan and Corey O’Donnell steal the scene with focus, smiles, and just enough mischief (bottle included). Vibrant blue jerseys pop against the green field, while the slightly blurred background keeps the spotlight on the action. It’s a lively snapshot of camaraderie, skill, and pure joy—the kind of moment that makes you want to grab a ball and join in.
