Archie McCubbin S6 – Stalemate

Stale Mate” is a visually striking short film inspired by German Expressionism, particularly The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Krapp’s Last Tape. The story unfolds in a shadowy, low-key environment, where a solitary man plays chess under the harsh glow of a single light. Stark contrasts and elongated shadows amplify the tension as the man responds to moves shouted by an unseen, disembodied voice. The oppressive atmosphere and abstract framing explore themes of control, isolation, and the psychological weight of unseen forces.
