Practical Magic 2 – Movie Review

44 Metacritic
Average

Twenty-eight years after the original charmed audiences, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman pulled their broomsticks back out of storage on 11 September 2026 for Practical Magic 2. This time the curse hits closer to home: when Sally's daughter Kylie falls in love and her boyfriend collapses into a coma, the Owens sisters are dragged back into the family's dark magic to break the curse for good.

Critics have been split down the middle: IndieWire called it a film that'll "let yourself fall for Practical Magic like you've never been hurt before," while The New York Times found it "a sweet movie, sometimes moving, about accepting your family heritage and coming into your own power." Others weren't so charmed — several reviewers pointed to a wobbly script and a plot that leans a little too hard on nostalgia. Across 41 reviews it's settled at 44 on Metacritic, almost identical to the 48 the 1998 original scored. Go in for the cosy, candlelit sisterhood and the Bullock–Kidman chemistry rather than a tight plot, and there's still real magic here.

The Verdict

If you loved the original, this is a warm, witchy reunion worth the trip back to the Owens house — just don't expect it to outdo the film you grew up with. Bullock and Kidman still have the chemistry; the script just doesn't always keep up with them.
