The Social Subjects curriculum plays a crucial role in shaping the intellectual development of students as they progress through their education. By engaging with different subjects such as Geography, History, Modern Studies, Rural Skills, Sociology, and religious, moral and philosophical studies, students develop a range of generic thinking skills that are applicable to many different areas of their lives. They also accrue basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts underlying different social subjects, which are vital for their future growth and success.

Through the Social Subjects curriculum, candidates also acquire a deep and nuanced understanding of the world around them. They learn to view the world through the lens of human experience, considering the values, beliefs, and experiences of others in different times, places, and circumstances. At Stranraer Academy, our Broad General Education (BGE) History course introduces pupils to key events, people, and ideas that have shaped Scotland, Britain, and the wider world. Learners explore a variety of historical periods, from ancient civilizations to modern times, developing their understanding of cause and consequence, continuity and change, and the impact of individuals and societies.

The course encourages critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to evaluate sources and evidence. Through discussion, investigation, and analysis, pupils gain an appreciation of historical perspectives and learn to construct informed arguments. BGE History provides a strong foundation for National History courses in the Senior Phase, while nurturing curiosity, analytical thinking, and an understanding of the world today.

National 4 and 5 History at Stranraer Academy develops pupils’ understanding of key historical events, people, and developments in Scotland, Britain, and the wider world. Learners study a range of topics, such as the Scottish Reformation, Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and social and political change, while building skills in research, analysis, and source evaluation.

At National 4, assessment focuses on practical tasks, including assignments and project work, helping pupils demonstrate understanding and application of historical knowledge. At National 5, pupils complete a combination of a question paper and assignment, developing skills in critical thinking, interpretation of sources, and constructing well-reasoned historical arguments.
