Photographers of the Week – 05/09/25

Welcome back! Last week saw a brilliant return, with voting heating up for the public’s favourites. Congratulations to Keara Bark, Phoebe Manson and Katie Kirkbride, who all go through to the grand final. The talent was so strong that Mr James has even introduced a wild card slot for work that shows exceptional composition and technical flair – proof that sometimes the underdog really does get the last laugh.

This week, the entries are nothing short of outstanding. Every single photo has blown me away – you’ve managed to capture moments that will leave everyone amazed. Choosing a winner will be tougher than convincing a snail to run a marathon. Let’s dive in.

In “Delicate Balance” by Ellie-May Watson, a bumblebee nestles among soft pink flowers, its fuzzy body dusted with pollen. The close-up detail highlights the bee’s essential role as a pollinator while the contrast between dark fur and pastel petals creates a striking balance. This image feels alive, a quiet celebration of nature’s teamwork – proof that sometimes the tiniest workers are carrying the heaviest load.

“Rider’s Flight” by Hamish Scott throws us right into the action. A motocross rider soars mid-air, bike suspended against a backdrop of colourful tents and cheering crowds. The angle and timing capture both the skill and daring of the sport, freezing a moment of pure adrenaline. It’s a shot that really does jump off the page.

In “Wings of Colour” by Charley Boyd, a butterfly rests delicately on vivid purple flowers, its black wings flecked with orange and white markings. The shallow focus draws the eye to the butterfly’s fragile form while the blurred greenery adds a natural frame. It’s a snapshot of harmony and beauty – a reminder that sometimes the best way to fly is simply to stop and bask in the sun.

“Pathway to Peace” by Georgia Sutherland guides us down stone steps flanked by lush, palm-like greenery to a still lake where a sailboat drifts gently. The soft blue tones of the water and sky melt together, creating a soothing calm, while distant hills complete the scene. It’s the kind of photo that invites you in and makes you wish you’d packed a picnic.

In “Radiant Dahlia” by Robyn Poag, layers of pink petals ripple out from a golden centre. The close-up makes the textures almost tangible, and the soft-focus background lets the dahlia shine as the true star. Radiant in colour and elegance, it’s floral glamour at its best – Mother Nature showing off.

“Morning Calm at the Marina” by Beth Blythe captures boats resting on glassy water beneath the soft light of morning. From little dinghies to sturdy fishing vessels, everything is mirrored in still reflection, framed by bursts of greenery. It’s a moment of peace so quiet you can almost hear the ropes creak.

“A Soul in Contemplation” by Keziah Blythe shows a lone figure leaning on a balcony as the sun dips, golden light spilling across calm seas. The reflection glimmers on the horizon, suggesting both stillness and hope. With its warmth, solitude and sense of mindfulness, this is a photo that makes you stop, breathe, and simply be.

In “Life in Green” by Keara Bark, a bright lizard blends seamlessly into its leafy background, yet still commands attention with vivid scales and a piercing gaze. Its posture suggests curiosity and alertness, inviting us into its tiny jungle world. A reminder that camouflage doesn’t mean you can’t still be a star.

“Crystal Clear” by Daniel Moradillo presents a crisp winter scene – mountains dusted in snow, ice reflecting the sun’s brilliance, and deep blue waters cutting through the white. The contrasts are striking, the scale vast and humbling. It’s a photograph that captures both the serenity and the raw power of nature, chilled to perfection.

“Enter the Sunlight” by Katie Kirkbride leads us down a golden country path where a figure walks alongside two horses at sunset. The warm glow silhouettes the hills and sparkles on the water, creating a serene harmony between people, animals and land. A moment of rural poetry – the mane event of the evening.

In “Fields of Gold” by Cameron McClymont, a tractor stands silhouetted against a glowing sunset, fields of straw stretching in the foreground. The textures of harvest and the nostalgia of twilight combine to celebrate both hard work and quiet beauty. Farming never looked so cinematic.

“A Rider’s Leap” by Sean McCredie is a burst of action: a mountain biker mid-air against blurred trees, motion blur conveying speed and daring. The crisp bike against the hazy backdrop makes the stunt even more thrilling. It’s not just a leap – it’s a full-blown launch.

In “A Farmer’s Journey” by James Turtle, golden light spills over rolling fields as a tractor carves through freshly cut grass. The horizontal lines draw the eye to the horizon, symbolising the daily cycle of toil and renewal. At once peaceful and powerful, it’s a tribute to resilience and connection to the land.

“Dirt and Grit” by Harry McIntyre shifts gears with a rider tearing across grass on an ATV. The overcast sky adds drama, while mud, focus and raw determination take centre stage. This one’s all about adrenaline – extreme sport in its natural habitat.

“A Portal to the Past” by Kelyse Edwards frames an ornate archway bathed in golden light. The intricate carvings tell stories of heritage, while the play of shadow enhances their depth. It’s a photograph that feels like stepping through time itself, reminding us of the craftsmanship and culture etched into stone.

And finally, “Gentle Explorer” by Zara Hamilton zooms in on a snail perched on a green leaf, its spiral shell glistening with detail. The tiny holes in the leaf tell a story of life and survival, while the snail makes its unhurried journey. A quiet reminder that slow and steady doesn’t just win the race – it wins the photo too.
