Technologies

Technology can be described as a vast and complex field, encompassing a wide range of knowledge and skills that are used to extend our human capabilities and to fulfill our ever-evolving needs and wants. With the rise of modern society, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, with profound effects on how we live, work, and communicate with one another. It is through the study of technology and its various applications that children and young people can gain valuable skills and knowledge that will help them become informed, adaptable, and enterprising citizens.

The technologies curriculum area offers a diverse range of subjects, including digital literacy, food and textile technology, technological developments in society and business, craft, design, engineering and graphics, and computing science. Through these subjects, students can gain a deeper understanding of the various ways in which technology impacts our lives, and how they can use it to create positive change in the world. By pursuing an education in technology, students can become well-rounded individuals who are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in the modern world.

🛠️ BGE Craft, Design & Technology at Stranraer Academy

At Stranraer Academy, our Broad General Education (BGE) CDT courses introduce pupils to practical design and making skills through a range of creative and technical activities. Learners explore woodwork, metalwork, and graphic communication, developing confidence in using tools, machinery, and digital design software safely and effectively.

These courses encourage problem-solving, creativity, and precision while helping pupils understand the design process from concept to finished product. BGE CDT provides a strong foundation for National qualifications in Practical Woodwork, Practical Metalwork, and Graphic Communication, preparing pupils for future pathways in design, engineering, and construction.

🪵 National 4 & 5 Practical Woodwork at Stranraer Academy

Practical Woodwork gives pupils hands-on experience in designing, manufacturing, and finishing wooden projects. Learners develop skills in measuring, marking out, cutting, and assembling, while gaining knowledge of materials, tools, and construction techniques.

Assessment focuses on practical tasks and projects, with emphasis on accuracy, craftsmanship, and safe working practices. The course encourages problem-solving and attention to detail, providing a strong foundation for further study in design, construction, or engineering.

🔩 National 4 & 5 Practical Metalwork at Stranraer Academy

Practical Metalwork allows pupils to develop practical skills in working with metals, including measuring, cutting, shaping, joining, and finishing. Learners gain an understanding of different materials and manufacturing processes, as well as the importance of accuracy and safety in workshop practice.

Assessment is based on practical projects that develop craftsmanship and technical ability. The course supports pathways into further study or apprenticeships in engineering, manufacturing, and related trades.

📐 National 4 & 5 Graphic Communication at Stranraer Academy

Graphic Communication combines creativity with technology, teaching pupils how to communicate ideas visually through both manual drawing and computer-aided design (CAD). Learners develop skills in 2D and 3D graphics, presentation techniques, and interpreting design briefs.

Assessment includes practical assignments that test accuracy, visual communication, and problem-solving skills. The course encourages creativity and precision, providing a foundation for careers in architecture, engineering, design, and digital media.

📐 Higher Graphic Communication at Stranraer Academy

Higher Graphic Communication develops advanced skills in visual communication, design, and presentation. Learners explore both manual and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques, producing 2D and 3D graphics that clearly and creatively communicate ideas.

The course allows pupils to apply design thinking, technical accuracy, and creativity while responding to complex briefs. Assessment includes a folio of practical work and an exam, where students demonstrate spatial awareness, visual literacy, and problem-solving through design.

Higher Graphic Communication provides an excellent foundation for careers and further study in architecture, product design, engineering, and digital media, as well as pathways into creative and technical industries.

Higher Design & Manufacture provides a strong foundation for careers or further study in product design, engineering, manufacturing, and architecture, combining creativity with practical application and technological understanding.

Assessment includes reading and writing papers, talking assessments, and portfolio work, allowing learners to demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, and sophisticated use of language. The course encourages independent research, reflection, and the ability to evaluate and respond to different viewpoints.

Higher English provides a strong foundation for Advanced Higher English, further study, and a wide range of careers, helping pupils develop analytical, expressive, and communication skills that are essential for success in both education and life.
