In secondary schools, there are two stages to the curriculum; the Broad General Education and Senior Phase.
Senior Phase (S4-S6), a flexible system that offers increased personalisation and choice, where young people continue to develop the four capacities and have opportunities to gain qualifications. All young people in Scotland have an entitlement to a senior phase of education which:
The S5/6 curriculum gives pupils the opportunity to make further individual progress with their subjects, whether that is developing at National 3, 4 or 5 or taking their subjects to new levels at Higher or, in S6, to Advanced Higher. Experience in taking a new subject may be available to pupils. Pupils take 5 courses in S5 and up to 5 subjects in S6; giving them every opportunity to meet the entrance requirements for college and university.
Students entering S3 are offered the following subjects as options for study. In S4 they will choose 5 of these subjects to continue, along with English and Maths, giving a total of 7 national certificate courses.
Students entering S3 in 2026 were offered the following subjects as options for study. In S4 they will continue with their chosen subjects, along with English and Maths, through to national certification exams and awards (click on the image to discover more).
2026 – 2027 Options Available in s5 & s6
